Sharp Roofing has received the "Torch Award for Ethics" from the Better Business Bureau twice, first in 2019 and again in 2024. The award honors businesses that show real integrity in how they treat customers, employees, and their community. For homeowners in Holland and across West Michigan, it is an independent look at how we do business before you ever invite us onto your roof.
What the BBB Torch Award for Ethics Recognizes
The Torch Award for Ethics is the BBB's way of recognizing businesses and nonprofits that hold themselves to a high ethical standard. An independent panel of judges from the local business and nonprofit community reviews each entry and selects finalists and a winner in every category. Companies are grouped by number of employees, so each business competes against others of a similar size.
Before a company can even be considered, it has to meet a few baseline standards set by the BBB:
- At least three years in business
- A BBB rating of "B" or higher
- Operations within the BBB's Michigan service area
- No Torch Award win in the previous three years
BBB accreditation is not required to win. The award reflects how a company actually operates, not a membership it pays for.
Our First Torch Award for Ethics in 2019
In 2019, the BBB Serving Western Michigan named Sharp Construction, our company name at the time, a Torch Award for Ethics winner. We were still a young company, and the recognition confirmed that the way we had chosen to run our business was being noticed.
In the BBB's video about the award, owner Ryan Spencer described what our team tries to show every homeowner we work with: "This is what integrity looks like. This is what communication looks like. This is what never being left behind looks like."
Ryan and his business partner cut their teeth in roofing by chasing storms. That experience showed them a gap in the West Michigan market. As Ryan put it, shingles are sometimes just shingles, but the service around them can be completely different. Sharp was built to bring that different experience to Holland homeowners, from the first conversation with a salesperson to every call with our office staff.
That approach comes from our mission statement, which Ryan called "the foundation of everything we do": to walk in truth and integrity as we pursue the completion of work and satisfaction of our customers.
Earning the Torch Award Again in 2024
Five years later, the BBB recognized us a second time. Sharp Construction was a finalist in the 11 to 50 employee business category and was named the 2024 winner. The BBB in Western Michigan presented the awards on December 9, 2024, at the JW Marriott in downtown Grand Rapids.
By then we had grown into a full roofing and exterior renovation contractor, about eight and a half years into the business. Ryan was quick to give the credit to our people: "We feel that the greatness of Sharp is because of the individual greatness of the employee." He closed the BBB's video the same way: "It takes a team here, and I couldn't do it without them."
One way that shows up inside our company is a program we call Eyes Up. The name works on a few levels. We keep our eyes up on the roofs we care for, on the Lord, and on needs in our community that we can help meet. When our team spots one of those needs, we highlight it across the company.
Why Third-Party Recognition Matters When You Hire a Roofer
Every contractor who knocks on your door is going to tell you a story about their company. Ryan's view is simple: when you can check that story against six, seven, or eight other sources, you can feel confident you are choosing someone who cares about the same things you do.
The BBB Torch Award is one of those sources, and winning it twice means our practices held up to a second independent review five years after the first. It sits alongside our A+ BBB rating and accreditation and our standing as a GAF Master Elite contractor, which you can read more about on our About Sharp Roofing page.
What Ethical Roofing Looks Like on Your Project
An award only means something if you feel it on your own job. Here is how the values behind the Torch Award show up when you work with us:
- Honest Recommendations: Our goal is to tell you plainly whether a roof repair in Holland will solve the problem or whether replacement makes more sense for your home and budget.
- Clear Communication: You should always know what is happening, what comes next, and who to call with a question, from your first estimate through cleanup.
- Guidance After a Storm: Storm damage is stressful, and our team can walk you through the roof insurance claim process so nothing gets missed.
- Never Left Behind: We want every homeowner to feel looked after during and after the project, not just until the last shingle goes on.
You can hear how this plays out in our homeowners' own words on our customer reviews page.
